Tripping Through the Kitchen

October 2, 2009

After being away from home so much of the summer September was a month to settle down, do some cooking, focusing on garden and farm fresh produce.

I heard once that a person uses an average of three recipes from each cookbook in their collection. With shelves lined with cookbooks amassed over 46 years I’m sure I’m not hitting par. My kitchen has never seen a recipe from many of the books . Others yielded recipes immediately enjoyed that have become family favorites and traditions.

Perhaps seeing Julie and Julia led to some inspiration or maybe I was just bored with my repertoire. The beginning of September I sat down with four Junior League cookbooks from around the country, with the goal of finding at least three recipes from each book that I would cook during the month. I made a list for each book, referring to the notepad frequently during menu planning and shopping.

Creating new dishes made meal preparation more interesting and  tasty. I think I tried about 16 recipes from my list yielding more than a dozen successes, a couple that needed a bit of a boost for our tastes and only one that falls into the failure category.

As time allows I’ll post the recipes for future reference. If one inspires you, feel free. If you make improvements please share your successes.
